23 November: Tamagotchi goes on sale, and a bowl of Miso Soup
On 23 November 1996 Bandai released the Tamagotchi in Japan, an egg-shaped digital pet that needed feeding and attention every single day. Daily care deserves Japan's everyday soup: miso soup, the quiet companion served with almost every Japanese meal.

Miso Soup
Japan6.8
Miso soup is the quiet companion of almost every Japanese meal, served alongside rice and pickles at breakfast, lunch and dinner. It begins with dashi, a delicate stock made from kombu seaweed and dried bonito flakes, into which fermented soybean paste is dissolved just before serving.
