28 November: Magellan names the Pacific, and a bowl of Caldillo de Congrio
On 28 November 1520 Ferdinand Magellan's three ships slipped out of the strait at the tip of South America into an ocean so calm he named it the Pacific, the peaceful sea. The strait lies in today's Chile, so the day belongs to caldillo de congrio, the conger eel soup of Chile's Pacific coast.
