18 November: Mickey Mouse makes his debut, and a bowl of Manhattan Clam Chowder
On 18 November 1928 Steamboat Willie opened at the Colony Theatre in New York, and Mickey Mouse whistled his way into the world in one of the first cartoons with synchronised sound. A Manhattan premiere earns a Manhattan bowl: the red, tomato-based clam chowder that carries the name of the island where Mickey was born.
