Antoni Gaudí, the architect of the Sagrada Família, was born in Reus, Catalonia, on 25 June 1852. Catalonia's escudella i carn d'olla is just as ambitious: meats, vegetables and one giant meatball, built up over hours.

Escudella i carn d'olla is the great Catalan meat and vegetable soup. Beef, chicken, pork bones, pig's trotter, black and white butifarra sausage and chickpeas are simmered for hours with cabbage, potato, carrot, celery and turnip.
